Term 3

Our Power of Reading Text for this term is Varjak Paw by SF Said.

English

Varjak Paw is a small Mesopotamian Blue cat who lives with his family in the Contessa's house on the hill. Varjak's brother, Julius, is always making fun of him because he has amber eyes instead of green eyes such as the rest of his family. When a large gentleman and two mysterious black cats enter the house, Varjak and his grandfather, Elder Paw, knows that something is wrong. The family is split apart, leaving Varjak to embark on a quest to the city for help. Using a form of secret cat martial arts called "The Way" handed down from his ancestor, Jalal Paw, the kitten must make his way through the city and overcome obstacles such as dangerous dogs, gangs of cats, and the mysterious "Vanishings."

The children will have the opportunity to write in role, draft and write poetry, diary entries, dialogue and newspaper articles.  Through discussions, conscience alley and hot seating the children will delve deeper into the understanding of each character and what it takes to be ‘a real Mesopotamian Blue!’

Maths

In Spring 1, Year 4 will be learning all about fractions! We will be recapping the concept of fractions and ensuring we have a solid understanding before moving on to more complex fraction problems.

Science

This term we have an exciting new science topic; Chemistry! We hope that through these exciting and engaging lessons we can ignite a real ‘flame of enthusiasm’ (safely of course!)

From ancient Greece to the present day, mankind has puzzled over the nature of matter and why materials behave the way they do.

Particle theory helps to explain properties and behaviour of materials by providing a model which enables us to visualise what is happening on a very small scale inside those materials.

The lessons this term are split into two sequences; Particle Theory itself, and an introduction to simple chemical reactions.
