Topic:  This term our topic encompasses geography, history and art which ties into our book this term titled ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’ by Kate DiCamillo. We will be learning about maps and how to read them, make our own and learn how to read 4 point gird references. We will also be learning how to use a compass correctly. In history the children will research key events in Victorian/ Edwardian history, producing and presenting a fact sheet. In art we will learn layering techniques and creating a water colour painting of Edward Tulane. In our class reflections we will be focusing on British Values.

English

Power of Reading / English: ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’ by Kate DiCamillo

Boys and girls alike will be drawn into this poignant adventure story set in North America. Through a roller coaster of emotions, Edward, a china rabbit, experiences wildly different settings, identities and owners, thereby gradually learning the value of love and friendship. Edward’s often harrowing experiences help shape him from a vain, pompous creature into a thoughtful, considerate friend.

The narrative structure is carefully crafted and the characters and settings are well drawn, offering young readers a good model for their own story planning and descriptive writing. Children can also be encouraged to look for examples of American vocabulary, grammar and spelling.

The generous layout of the book with its wide line spacing and delicate illustrations helps to make the text less dense and thereby accessible to a wide range of readers.

This text gives pupils the opportunity to write in role, compose poems and songs as well as writing longer narratives.

Maths

In maths this term we will be learning more about fractions, including adding and subtracting fractions, comparing and ordering unit fractions and equivalent fractions. We will then be moving on to geometry and looking at 2D and 3D shapes, estimating and comparing angles and understanding horizontal and vertical lines including parallel lines. We will also be revisiting measure, comparing mass and length and then moving on to statistics.

PE: In PE we will be learning strike and field games and  work on our catching skills before moving onto playing rounders.

RE: In Religious Education we will be learning more about Christianity (ascension, Pentecost  and Bible stories about courage and bravery) then moving onto other world religions. These lessons will encourage development of the childrens’ empathy, reflection, investigating and responding skills.

In music we will have fun singing in ensembles,  improvising and composing music for a range of purposes using the interrelated dimension of music.
