Our Topic – Explorers

Our creative curriculum topic for the Summer terms is “Explorers”. We will be exploring our local environment and investigating green plants.

Numeracy

This year a lot of focus is going to be on Problem solving where the children asked to apply their mathematical knowledge. We will be training the children up to think systematically when they are solving a problem, to be able to explain how they solved a problem using key mathematical vocabulary.

Literacy

This term we will be focussing on a significant children’s author. We will be looking at books written by Anthony Browne. We will be creating a display in the classroom about Anthony Browne, the children will be finding out about this author and exploring his books. If anyone has any books by Anthony Browne that they could lend us to add to our display then please bring these in. We will be using the book “The Tunnel” as a starting point for our learning.

Foundation Subjects

Science

As part of our “Explorers” topic the children will be finding out all about green plants. We will be growing our own beans and keeping a record of their growth and development in a bean diary. We will be exploring the things that green plants need in order to grow and will be carrying out some investigations.

Geography

We will be finding out about plants that grow in our local environment. We will be creating maps of our local area, using a key to show local features. We will be making a visit to St John’s road to carry out some traffic surveys and to explore the local shops

ART and DT

The children will be finding out about the artist Andy Goldsworthy and using his work with natural materials as an inspiration for their own work.

In DT the children will be creating a scene from their favourite Anthony Browne book inside a shoe box. They will be using a wide range of materials and techniques to create their scene.

Languages

In French we will be learning to ask how old someone is and how to respond to the question. We will be learning how to say “Yes” “No” and “Thank you”. We will be revising the words and phrases we have learnt so far.

PE

The children will be doing games with the help of Mrs Naismith. If the weather is nice we will be going outside for games.

Music

we will be learning lots of pulse and pitch skills with instruments and singing

RE

This term the children will be finding out about the stories that Jesus told. These will be some of the most well know parables such as The Prodigal Son. We will also be looking at the celebration of saint’s days and why we remember and celebrate these.
