English

Our Power of Reading Text for this term is The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

Where had he come from? Nobody knows.'

'How was he made? Nobody knows.'

This modern fairy tale has become a children’s classic. The dramatic opening and memorable language instantly engages the reader. The book tells the story of a mysterious iron giant whose destructive quest for food alarms the local farming community. The story is told through the eyes of a young boy, Hogarth, who forms a friendship with the Iron Man. In time the Iron Man turns from villain to hero as the world faces a bigger threat.

The children will discuss the text at length and its meaning, explore the narrative plot, settings, characters and draw inferences to aid understanding. They will write non-fiction texts in the form of newspaper reports based on the narrative. Throughout this text, the children will broaden their understanding of the writers’ use of language and build a varied vocabulary. Also they will be looking at poetry in relation to the narrative. Starting to learn and recite poems to the class.

Maths

In mathematics we will be learning about multiplication and division. We will learn about recalling multiplication and division facts for 3, 4 and 8. We will learn about more formal methods to work with larger and more complex numbers. We will learn how to use these methods to solve problems involving arrays, repeated addition and mental methods including problems in context. We will solve problems including missing number problems, using number facts, place value, and more complex addition and subtraction. We continue to learn about measures using appropriate units and also learn to measure the perimeter of simple 2D shapes.

Science

In Science this term we are continuing the exciting Empiribox scheme of work. We are going to be focusing on forces and Magnets for the remainder of the Autumn term. Empiribox believe the only way for children to learn science is with fun and exciting practical experiments, inspiring children throughout their lives. These experiments are carefully chosen to explore fundamental science concepts, whilst enthralling the children!
